The University of Utah Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling hosts a student journal club attended by both first- and second-year genetic counseling students. This spring, we were excited to expand this opportunity by creating a joint even between the UUGPGC Journal Club and the Association of Utah Genetic Counselors (AUG) Education series. Three student presenters, Maria Mills, Meagan Lindstrom, and Megan Rimmasch each chose and presented an article to the numerous attendees. From the discussion, it was clear that the range of experience and diversity of views on the Zoom call was an asset to all involved! We discussed the challenges associated with inpatient genetic counseling care, the family impacts of Huntington’s disease, and the requirements of shadowing prior to admission to genetic counseling school. The event was lively and involved and brought together individuals in our profession from very different backgrounds, including some from out of state! CEUs were offered for the certified counselors attending the event. We plan to offer more of these combined educational events in future years.
