Katie Swade, MS, LCGC, of the University of Utah Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, is the UUGPGC recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Genetic Counseling Clinical Supervisor Award. This award is given by the Association of Genetic Counseling Program Directors (www.agcpd.org) to recognize the invaluable contributions clinical supervisors make to genetic counseling student training.
Katie was selected because of her ability to establish a supervisory relationship in which students are both supported and challenged, to provide constructive feedback that promotes student growth, to provide students with excellent learning opportunities while maintaining high quality patient care, and for serving as an example of what a genetic counselor should be.
Specific comments submitted by the Class of 2019 students included, “Katie was a patient and empathetic supervisor. Students felt she gave enough independence during rotations to feel confident, but still was available when students needed help. Her feedback was constructive while being supportive which helped students improve their counseling skills. Students appreciated her “real world” approach, providing general feedback that could be applied to all specialties..” Congratulations to Katie! We are so pleased that her dedication to education, expertise in the profession, and kindness to all are recognized on a national level!
