Our Mission

We are a visionary, integrated team of clinicians, scientists, and educators dedicated to establishing excellence in genetic counselors through their graduate studies and beyond. We accomplish this by:

  • Educating students with up-to-date information, provided by experts, using varied and evidence- based educational techniques. Beyond didactic knowledge, we seek to foster outstanding skills in communication, scholarship, research, clinical practice, and life-long learning.
  • Committing ourselves to upholding a culture of belonging and for all trainees, staff, and faculty. All backgrounds are appreciated, respected, and welcomed.
  • Creating a space where all students can be themselves, encouraging them to grow, and fostering an environment of collaboration, rather than competition. We value the lifelong skills of balance and self-compassion to be the best professionals we can be.

While the University of Utah has a national and international reputation as a center of excellence in genetics, we understand that our knowledge of genetics is constantly growing. That is why our curriculum committee meets regularly to ensure that course content continues to reflect the ever-changing field of genetics.

Our program is designed to guide students through the training process and help them develop into knowledgeableeffective, and supportive genetic counseling professionals. The program curriculum is also designed to prepare students for all settings of practice, including non-traditional roles.
